    Default Hawaii Cymbidium

    Hi folks,

This is a cymbidium we got in Hawaii on the big island. It was growing wild in our friends yard. She actually mows these down. She doesn't know the name but I am hoping that you might. Any identification? It came from Hilo, Hawaii about 8 or so years ago. It is very fragrant and grows, well, "like a weed."

EDIT: Hoa found the name: cymbidium aloifolium

EDIT 2: Ron noticed the leaves are thin on this one and said that it actually should be labeled Cymbidium dayanum. Thanks for the help guys!

This orchid appears to be cymbidium aloifolium, a warming-growing cymbidium species. It is warming growing, that is why it's doing so well in Hawaii or in a greenhouse.
    Cheers. Hoa.

Well, it is very warm here now but when the winter comes, watch out! The problem is that the plant does not like temps in the 40s and only tolerate 50s temps. So this plant I have it is in the greenhouse along with my other warm-growing cymbidiums! Thanks goodness, the coolness of other seasons here in Southern Cal really slows down its growth, if not, I don't know where to put it.
    Cheers. Hoa.

I love the stripes and the lip! Maybe one of these days I'll get brave enough to try out a warm growing cymbidium...
