Wink My Orchid grow area! *Updated* 2009

Okay, its time to show updated pics of my grow area. It's more cramped than ever so good luck trying to sort through plants in the space.

My original grow space thread is here:

    Old pics of grow area

    East side:

    Railng on East side:

Below railling is cramped...plants in pots of other plants!

Newcomers hiding under the Desert Rose:

East side as seen from the lawn:

    Now the West side"

Screening all around the ones on the ground to protect them from the sun:

It's a very bright space...which is why is so cramped. The back porch is really dark on the north side and only has my seedlings and a few struggling plants. Hope you enjoyed it!

Nice and green! I saw your vanilla vine in there...I recently overheard a clerk telling someone how difficult they were to grow. You're obviously doing a great job!

Looking good, I like the cramped up messy look, seriously!
You should extend that porch 5 feet towards the lawn ... more growing space.
Do you leave your orchids outside all year long?
So you have some plants completely enclosed in burlap, is that right?
I couldn't really make this out from the pictures.

If I can grow it in an apartment in Brooklyn, you could grow it without any problem in Florida, Connie.
It's the only plant I have in S/H and it LOVES it, growing in a sunny south window.
(it was slowly dying growing in the "right" mix in bright shade before)
If only I could stop breaking it when I try to make it go where I want it to go!

Looking very nice, Shann! Keep going! I agree with Lambert- you can extend a bit and use some more space.

Wow, that looks amazing. I love all of your plant. It must make you so happy to spend time on the porch!

Think of it as an opportunity -- If it breaks off, just root it and start another plant. It is pretty easy to do and then you will have more trading material.
Another way to grow your collection without spending more money.

    Cheers,

    Red face

    Thanks everyone for the responses!

I saw your vanilla vine in there...I recently overheard a clerk telling someone how difficult they were to grow.
I find them easy to grow but impossible to bloom. I've read that the plant likes its vine to be kinked in many different directions and then I guess you get lucky. I got my plant as a cutting from a local orchid grower and his has bloomed profusely...so maybe mine will too one day. You should get one...they are really neat and maybe one day you will have vanilla beans!

You should extend that porch 5 feet towards the lawn ... more growing space.

I wish I could but I can't at this house...it's a rental and there isn't much space out front before you hit the sidewalk.

Do you leave your orchids outside all year long?
If it goes below 37-38 they come in and hang on ladders in the house...it stinks but its my only option for now.

So you have some plants completely enclosed in burlap, is that right?
I have a burlap screen on one side and burlap up high on the railing for the vanilla. This creates bright filtered light but no direct sun. The east railing plants get direct sun in the morning.

im surprised, on some spots there seemed to be no light overhead, but they all do well.
Even up high that entire space is facing south and is blasted by bright indirect sun all day. The ones really high up on the east side get morning sun. The west side plants are just high enough to not get direct sun in the late afternoon. It took me awhile to get all the plants in just the right spot to avoid burn.

Thanks all for enjoying the area even though it's messy. To really see whats going on in there I have to take them all down every couple weeks and look closely to make sure all is well. If it wasn't for the mosquitoes I would spend more time out there but man...those suckers really know how to ruin outdoor fun!
