Default My Attempt at a Grow Area

Here are pics of the grow area I created in my basement in October. As you can see I use shop lights and the orchids seem to be doing well. I covered the walls in mylar a few days ago. The orchids have been doing well so I hope this area continues to work for me. As the orchids come into bloom they are moved upstairs. Any suggestions/advice

Good job Bill. I bet it's nice and humid down there. What temperature range are you working with?

Thank you Mary. The humidity is good. I am a little concerned witht he temperature. It has been staying 58 to 62 with the outside temps in the low 20's to 30's. i am afraid I will have to break down and buy a heater which I would prefer not doing since Pennsylvania has deregulated the electric companies and rates are to go up 30% effective at midnight tonight. I di put in a couple flood lights at floor level. My thought is heat rises and the heat from them might help. I have noticed that my thermometer is up to 62 in some areas and I just installed them a few hours ago when i brought them in from taking down the outdoor Christmas decorations. Hope I can squeak by this year. Am concerned in that I leave in a week for an 11 day cruise and fear what the temps might do whikle away.

I see a basement as a perfect growing area myself...and yours looks great! I remember how humid my dad's basement always stayed (mid-michigan) and had thought it would be an ideal environment.

Just to say how much I admire your grow area and the effort you must have put in and also to remind myself how lucky I am to be able to grow my orchids outdoors 24/7.

Wow! You have natural daylight available, too, I see. Have you covered the sliding doors with a layer of plastic to cut cold air leakage, or are you keeping the exit uncovered for outdoor access? Our outdoor temperatures in central Iowa are below 0 farenheit this past week. So my basment is about 48 degrees in the "new" section that is not insulated and about 58 degrees in the insulated section. Time to pull out an oil-filled electric heater for my birds. The 'chids look fine, so I will not worry about them unless we have power outages. I think you will find the lower temps may slow growth but won't cause permanent damege.

Nice setup there! I was told by a friend before that orchid people are most resourceful. Your basement is an example of it
