Hey Matt, I so agree with you. For instance my ideal would be to have all my orchids growing freely, mounted on living Dicksonias, Cyatheas, on simulated rock faces together with mosses and other epi/lithophytes... That of course would entail having greater means at my disposal and housing my collection where moisture levels could be kept at a higher level than in my present conservatory. As it is I try to avoid using sticks and ties as much as I can in order to let the spikes develop in their natural orientation. But there is a limit of course: above a certain mass a spike has to be trained vertically so as not to overbalance a potted orchid, even when suspended...

We all lose some plants, Tony. Just chalk it up to the learning experience. Out of curiosity, how did you have the phal oriented on the mount? With phals, it often is helpful with regards to avoiding crownrot, to mount them with the crown facing down or down and out.
Sorry I missed this question the first time around! The seedling sp Phal I lost was situated crown down, which is usually the way I will mount them. I just didn't have particular luck with this batch of 4 seedlings. Eventually lost 3 of the 4 I had. No. 4 is Alive but not thriving as yet. I'm hoping our warm humid spring and summer wakes it up. I know the old saying that you need to kill your weight in orchids before you know what you are doing, but I'm hoping not to have to go that far.
    Best,
    Tony

Oh Damn! wished id thought of going on a diet first. I swear hindsight exists just to antagonise me. Would have to admit im not far off equalling my weight in orchid genocide, infact the final weight measurement post christmas and not before wouldnt be a lie.

Igor, i looked into the Dicksonia/ tree fern root as media for mounting. Very expensive and have better experience with oncids this way, it certainly altered my opinion of the prices decent pieces of cork bark demand. My mission this oncoming grow season is to hunt down and acquire a few diff. phal. species because Zain has been showing them off a treat. After a few battles i certainly know I have no choice but to mount them naked to bark and Johns usage of tillandsia moss will play a part for definite.

If u can recommend good supplier/ site based on your experience, Igor, of purchasing plants to UK or in UK please PM me. Choice is a tad daunting and time/ money is to precious to experiment/ trial with.
