Thanks, Kitty - you wouldn't believe the transformation that Balcony is going to undergo in the next few days. We have lots of shelving units for it that we haven't had a chance to put up yet, and Phillip's bonsai collection takes up most of it. I learned the hard way last summer that most orchids don't take too well to summers here in Atlanta, where the temperatures range between 95F - 105F for months! My cymbidiums, all 6 of them, however, share space with the bonsais - and they stay out all winter as well.

As for that little stool - we use it for photographing our plants, although I DID have one exactly like it when I was a child. My kids are all grown up - my son is almost 18 and my daughter is 21. Can't believe the time has gone by so fast!

Maura very nice growing area love it I wondering if you keep going on to put all the beautiful orchids in your balcony and other places at one point for the future you maybe saturated how are you going to accommodate them especially during the winter?

I'll post photo of it elsewhere on the Forum. I think it has a lot of bonsai potential.
Sorry don't know the plant. Nice name though. Hope you are successful turning it into a bonsai - hmmmm I can imagine someone remarking to another at a Bonsai show while pointing to it " Do you know that M Caffrey grew that Grewiacaffra?"

You have learned a lot Maura in a relatively short amount of time and made orchid adaptations accordingly. Just remember that man does not live on MSU Fertilizer and water alone. AL

Thank you, Zain, for your kind words. The balcony is just about to be turned into a bonsai garden, since most of Phillip's bonsais stay outdoors. They will be joined by our 2 new tropical trees - the Grewia caffra (mine) and Phillip's new Brazilian Rain Tree, if it lives - it seems very temperamental already. All my cymbidiums stay outside (6 of them), and have remained outside this entire very mild winter. However, since my collection consists primarily of heat-intolerant slipper orchids, they shall have to stay inside unless they suddenly develop the ability to withstand temps of 95F or more during the summer - not likely! I may put my brassia/oncid and cattleya hybrids out in the shade, and perhaps my new Encyclia bacillus (pentotis), but I'm not sure.

We have a big job coming up - have to scrub down the shelving units out there, get them put together, and find room for a couple of chairs for people!

You are too funny, Yew. I have, since I initially posted about this, learned that this tree/shrub is often mistakenly labeled as "Grewia Caffra" - as, it turns out was the case here. What I have is a Grewia occidentalis, commonly known as a Crossberry - Grewia caffra has yellow flowers, alas. I may continue to perpetrate the name confusion, however.

Phillip has given me a set of my own bonsai tools, so, if I follow the masters, and if I am patient (big "if" there!) I shall a bonsai tree of this make.

While good, those photos don't give you the idea what it's really like. 80 degree between 70% and 80% humidity and fans running every where, The eco doesn't have the selves up for my Bonsai collection. Maura is going to start Bonsai this year and got he tree and tools. So she's committed now. Whew it's hot in here!
