quite right the analogy used ' treehugger'. Much like the epiphytes bar the slippers on your desk. Better than being thought of as a parasite.

I had an interesting thought today when I noticed that yellow slipper is starting to fade:

    1. I have been told not to keep fruit near orchids, especially bananas, because it can cause the flowers to fade.
    2. I was also told that this particular phal had 2-3 weeks left of the bloom (I got it for a song) and it seems to be deteriorating rapidly.
    3. I eat a lot of bananas
The trash can isn't really near the orchids, but is it possible that just having the peel in the near vicinity could be causing my flowers to fade more quickly than they would elsewhere? Or is there something else here at work, like change in culture from the greenhouse it was grown in to my desk in the office?

any new phal bought in spike and rehomed with me has never kept the blooms longer than a week, buds shrivel and drop yes but open blooms along inflorescense wither/ drop also.

Ethlene gas is encouraged as a tool in the placement of an eaten apple core in close vicinity of mature pre unbloomed bromeliads especially the Urn Plant (aechema fasciata) but then they do flower direct sun or not every 4 - 5 years from pup.

Ali - I have read the same thing about ripening fruit releasing the gas that will wilt flowers prematurely - not only orchids, I believe. And Matt is right about changing an orchid's environment - particularly if it goes directly from a nursery to anywhere but another nursery. In general, wherever we put them indoors, light, humidity and air movement will be less than they are accustomed to and they have what I call "hissy fits".

They are finicky little beasts aren't they? Ah well, hopefully I'll get it to rebloom. I seem to have more luck with paphs then I do phals haha!
