I think we would be in trouble. If I got you hooked on begonia and gesneriad species (which without a doubt I could) You would be adding covered domes all over the house. The paphs are doing ok. I just need to find a place where they and I will be happy.

I'm impressed with how you keep so many in such a small area. Wait until "middle-aged retiree" becomes "grandmother to rambunctious children" and see how it goes!

I don't have half as many orchids as you do, but find I need to limit myself these days because there just aren't enough hours in the day. Even things I enjoy (and which I can find myself becoming obsessive about) need to be taken in moderation. It's a hard lesson, and I sometimes have to stop and remind myself to slow down so I can enjoy what I am doing at the time.

Some day, this middle-ager will be a retiree, too!

I only dream of retiring. I'll be working until I'm being pushed through the door in a wheelchair. Unless..I marry someone who can afford to let me retire or I win the lottery. I don't anything like that is happening.

Patty, thank you for the reminder. I have always struggled with the balance between enthusiasm and obsession and both Phillip and I are currently in the process of restoring that elusive balance.

Because neither of us retired voluntarily, we work hard to appreciate the blessing known as "free time" ; it helps keep us from grieving the loss of our past lives. We do, of course, understand that retiring was necessary - it is accepting it that can be so challenging. Be that as it may, however, acceptance is the only option these days - many of the health issues that first led us to retire are once again demanding our attention.

Re-ordering life is not code for getting out of the orchid business - or any other business for that matter - but I am moderating and balancing, re-learning to live in the moment. Naturally, patience is not one of my greatest virtues, so the progress is slow.

I know that everything happens for a reason, at the right time, and in the right way, so I am just where I am supposed to be - and so is everyone else. It's wonderful to have such company!

Ditto Patty! So many things come in disguise and determine the path we take. Some folk possess the wonderful strength of being able to extract the good from the negative. A gift all to often overlooked and disregarded.
