Default Egg in my orchid basket

A bird decided to set up a nest in one of my orchid baskets.

Mama bird keeps giving me the evil eye as I approach my orchids.
I should remind her that she should be happy I'm not charging her any rent.

It looks smaller and leaner than a dove but I'm not sure exactly what it is.

I have to water the basket from the sides so as not to risk damaging the egg and the nest.
The plant is not in the best shape too, so I will need to take it down to find out what's wrong. But I cannot do it yet because of the nest.

That's kind of cute! Must be kind of annoying, though.

Thanks for letting the bird family stay in the orchid. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the chick hatches and the orchid blooms around the same time.

    cheers,

It's head looks like a mourning dove. I'd bet the roosting mother doesn't get to eat much. And poo is natural fertilizer! HA! I have little chickadees and some not so little orioles that have used my mounts as perches and I just don't worry about it. Gotta change the food in the feeder though! I have millet sprouting up in dendrobiums....irritating as hell!

Its nice of you to do this and I have gotten a real kick out of your post. At least you know your tenant is only temporary. I hope all is well with the orchid in question, moma and future offspring! AL

Looks like what we call a wood dove, there's a smaller one we call a ground dove. A little while ago one was trying to nest in my neem tree but the kids keep playing too close to it and eventually it took off before laying anything. Hope you can keep the plant going til the residents leave.
