This is a discussion on Newly Built, Custom Fab Greenhouse within the OrchidTalk Members Grow Area - Photos forums, part of the Orchid Culture category; Very nice!...
Have started the battle against "the rots", guess that is what happens when all the ducks are not in a row!
First it all looks wonderful. I wish I had the room for such a large and spacious GH. Just a great job!
Are you having any problems with heat build up? I've spent many summer months in SC and know it can get pretty hot the further away from the coast you get.
Heat built up is one of my biggest issues at the moment. I have been throwing around some design ideas and plan on extending shade between the GH and the barn and opening up both sides of poly off the ground for about three feet. As it stands now, exhaust fan runs continuous from 1pm to 5pm, which causes humidity to take a big hit. Going to design/build and experimental "humidity sink" within the greenhouse and see if that help. Also having some water issues. if water sits in the rain barrels for more than 48 hours, my mist system becomes the worlds most efficient fungal delivers system, so i have to revamp that. Would love to hear some input if anyone is watering orchids with rain water.

Or maybe i will start a new thread on that one
Have you tried mist systems on GH fans? Another idea is add a tank (livestock type) and a pump with some sort of fountain nozzle. It throws vast amounts of water in the air.
I did have a bit of an idea about creating a "humidity well", basically a lined, open top, water storage tank of large size (sq footage) and having it level with the floor and filled with the same stone as the floor. I feel like this would Up the humidity a good bit but might require alot of maintenance insofar as algae and mosquitos.
You can just add some Bt israelensis rings...it will take care of the mosquitos and add couple of goldfish for the alage. Once the tank it is setup it is natural for an algae bloom but it will run its course and then all will be good.
Lots of space to continue growing. I know you will enjoy it. Great job!
