I have the opposite problem--in winter I have to run the humidifier to keep it above 50%. Turning on the heat should quickly dry the air some, plus a fan blowing near your orchids should help.

Jai-Star: I think i would shock the orchids if I opened a window. It is 46 F (8 c) and that is pretty much day and night.

As Bruce mentioned, more air movement will help to some extent while benefitting the plants. I keep lots of plants indoors during our winter. Some of them prefer to be constantly moist, so there is always a bit of a greenhousy scent in the air here. At some point, my partner and I had words about the fact that I was willing to adjust to some discomfort so the plants could be happy...I'm ok with the humidity, but dislike the smell. He's the exact opposite!

Katherine, even though I live in the breezy tropical south, when my phals have to come under cover and out of the garden because of rain, I keep a ceiling fan going under the covered lanai, esp. when it's cool (60s-70s)--this prevents sooty mold/damping off. As to your hydroponic question (growing in ceramic spheres?) from the phal baby potty-training thread, I wonder how you could keep a steady supply of organic breakdown products available to the roots, as would happen with the degradation of bark? Isn't that like drinking OJ without pulp...no bioflavinoids?
