Default Care to share photos of your outdoor grow area?

    Hello!

Our OS has been invited to give a presentation on orchid growing at a large Lawn & Garden show, and yours truly has been assigned speaker. I think I got the honor only because I talk a lot, because even after a few years, I still feel like a rank beginner. I owe most of what I know to the great folks at this forum and I wish I had more time lately to hang around here.

Our goal is to let folks know orchids are tougher than reputed and can be simply raised with enough light, air movement and the right amount of water. (The goal is to get them hooked with some modest successes. We all know you can spend a lifetime learning orchid nuances and barely scratch the surface.) One of the things I'm hoping to emphasize is the benefits of summering outdoors, especially for those who are not using supplmental lighting or those who can keep orchids alive for years but never rebloom them. I'm finally beginning to convince our other OS members that you just can't beat the great outdoors for light, air movement and humidity in our area.

So, I'm putting together a power point presentation and have been scouring my folders for good pictures. In my mind, I took a series of photos of my outdoor shelves last summer showing the light at various points in the day. These photos were either a figment of my imagination or deleted. All I can find is this picture of my son and his little friend:

See my orchids way, way in the back left? No? Here, let's zoom in. . .

Not exactly inspiring, is it? I know many of you have very attractive outdoor grow areas and I was hoping you would share with me so I can better describe how to set up a good space for orchids. The pictures won't be republished on the web or used for monetary gain and I will be happy to give you full credit. Thanks!

P.s. A shot of my hoard in their winter home:

I grow in a green house and don't often have orchids outside of it. I'd suggest pm-ing some of the members who do.

    cheers,

Good luck with your presentation. Sorry I can't be of much help. Our climate here - hot, wet equatorial - allows us to grow outdoors 24/7. There is just no equivalent in the US; not even in Florida. So here growing outdoors is the rule rather than the exception.

I grow outdoors 24/7 at the very tip of Texas, the big thing for me is I have my orchids in a shade house due to the intensity, volume of sun and location of the shade house. It only needs minor protection with our mild winters, just wrap it in plastic and use some space heaters for supplemental heat, the big thing for me during the winter is being able to roll the walls down when the temperature gets to warm which it often does to keep form cooking my orchids (which I did last year oops but it was a learning curve). During the rest of the year I mist them on a regular basis not so much for the humidity but to help keep the temperature down (summer temps often get over 100*F sometimes for months at a time). So far I've been doing good with them and to be honest where I live they do grow great outside. As of right now I'm getting in the process of putting an extension onto my shade house which will double its size to 200 sq ft.

I'm currently redoing my growing area and going through a cold snap but next week I may be able to help out with a few pics, if that is not too late
