I go outside a lot and just sit there. The plants give the porch shade and the air movement makes it so nice...not to mention all the orchids doing fun things. Eventually I either end up fussing over a plant or going back inside to avoid getting dirty and sweaty again. lol But yeah...I spend a ton of time out there. Lately my husband has to come get me so I eat, or I sit out there sweating furiously while I fuss over this plant or repot yet another neglected cattleya. And as is the norm, my thumb nails are cracking from being in dirt all the time. I call it "going outside to play with the orchids"....come to think of it I always did like playing in the mud...and it's only a job if you don't enjoy it.

I think everyone should have an orchid bar...it just makes all the bad things melt away like a bad memory. It is where I go when I need some inner peace...

    Connie-
Thank you for giving me an accurate image on what my porch is going to look like in another year or two

Also- I love your different shading techniques!
How do you water them all ??

The vanda section, the front part; gets watered every morning around 7 a.m., and in the summertime when temps go above 85 I water them a second time around Noon. When our temps stay in the 90+ range for days I add misting in as well around 3 p.m. Then there is a section of baskets and various miniatures that get watered every 2 or 3 days, again depending on temperature. The Cattleya in small pots get watered every 2 or 3 days, depending on which section they are in. My Encyclia sit between the large potted Cattleya, in a section with Cattleya in baskets that get watered according to temperatures and wind...sometimes they get watered every other day, sometimes every 4 days with the large potted Cattleya. I keep everything in groups, and more or less I can tell by picking one or two up as to whether to give them more water or less. Anything that hates water is kept at the far end of the porch. I have a setting on my watering wand that makes it almost like a soft summer rain, and the ones on the far end usually get that every 3 or 4 days with a thorough soaking once every two weeks. If a plant isn't doing well no matter what I do, I go back and research where they are from and what kind of tree/rock they like in nature. Sometimes it's as simple as hanging a plant higher off the ground, some plants like to be mere inches off the ground on a rack. I have a great deal of time on my hands and so I do a great deal of research. I use regular city water and have a hose attachment with 7 or 8 settings. It is my favorite thing, watering the plants.

Wow, Connie I'm really impressed! It is obvious you keep to a well organised maintenence schedule because all of your plants look so beautiful and healthy. You've given me some watering ideas, thank you!
I like watering/feeding my orchids as well. It gives me a chance to look at them closely, and I am fascinated when I notice the slight changes of growth!
