Default A sailing long weekend in the Aegean

Well, it's been a tough couple of months for me and my husband, so we decided to grab a couple of friends and go sailing from Athens to an aegean isle, Kea, on May 16-18. I've never been on a sailing boat before!
The AriAl is a 30 foot racer yacht
.
My brother in law will be the skipper, who's also a member of the crew that man her during the speed races.
The isle's landscape is beautiful though fairly arid and the buildings fuse with the enviroment as only local building materials are used (stone). It's not very far from the port we're departing, ca. 20 nautical miles.

What I could use is an amateur's guide on surviving a sailing boat trip! Any advice could be useful!!

There is something about old world charm that just is sooooo inviting....not that the good ol' USA hasn't wonderful locations....Enjoy and just don't look at the horizon bobbing up and down and you'll be just fine....

Stay up on deck - in the cockpit. Going below under way can lead to sea sickness. That's a small boat so be prepared for some motion if the seas are choppy. Bring lots of sunscreen and a hat.

ENJOY!

Sun block if you are fair complected - it is easy to burn on the water and not realize it. I also would take along sea sickness/ motion sickness wrist bands. I perfer them over any medications. Keep your camera attached to you by a wrist band also! _Oh yeah also make sure you get to sail the boat too.

I look forward to the photos!!

Cheers,
BD

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

Wear a life vest and make sure someone knows the name of the boat and where you're headed!

Eat! I was in the US Navy for 4 years and the most important thing to prevent sea sickness is to eat a good meal. If you are going to be taking dramamine, then start taking it around 6 hours before you are going out. Stay outside if you're sick. And enjoy! I miss the ocean, it is just so peaceful!!

Myth busters did a test awhile back on sea sickness and its cures. Ginger ended up being a very good source to take and prevent sea sickness. Find some ginger pills if you can just incase....or maybe ginger root.

Looks like its gonna be a lovely trip.
