The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the largest woodpeckers. It is unfortunately becoming rarer in many areas due to the removal of large, old growth trees.

Loved them all, but my personal favorite is the yellow shafted flicker at the bottom. Maybe because it was the first wood carving I did of a bird. Betty :-)

We have quite a few of them down here in Texas. I recognize them by their "woody the woodpecker" call!

Do you have the Green woodpecker I wonder ? The old English name for it is "Yaffle" because of the sound of its call , I imagine.
I love to see the birds, but have stopped putting out food for them as it attracts the squirrels who make such a mess, and also dig up anything I have planted out , as long as it is either rare or expensive. But we get a lot anyway for one reason or another , though few are as colourful as the ones seen here.

Love that closeup of the Pileated, Paul. The Downy is a good shot too. Geoff, Green Woodpeckers don't occur in the states, only Europe.

Its so unusual for us to have a bird which other people don't ! For example,
I know that when I go away for a bit of winter sun later this month. there won't be just a one in a million chance of seeing what we call the Kingfisher our only example - and they will have really suffered this hard winter, so make that one in 10 million - but there will be at least three kinds of Kingfishers, and often half a dozen of one or the other all sitting on the telegraph wire waiting to be seen. So allow me to boast just a little about our Yaffle. Not a real life piccy in my garden - I only hear them, in the forest in the Spring especially , and occasionally see a green blur gliding across a glade, high overhead ; and I only ever see wild-life of any kind when I am walking on my own. Out with my walking club mates, they do insist on talking (!) and we don't see anything.

That green woodpecker looks a lot like our yellow shafted flicker, Geoff.
