I was in Sri Lanka then - I was due to move to a nature reserve near the southern tip of the island 2 days later - it had a lodge for visitors and a viewing tower to watch birds in the lagoon - the tower was I think 70 foot high. The tsunami waves broke over the tower, the lodge was washed away, and several hundred people died at that site alone. I was still in Kandy , a few miles away but 6000 ft above sea-level - and I missed going for an unwanted swim at best by two days....
BTW I have three or four Aerides sp. all in spike at present - A.affine, Odoratum, houlletianum, maybe crispum (?) which I'll post as they bloom - but all are small plants , less than 10 inches high unless I count in the pot !

I have this Den Gatton Sunray which I got more than 40 years ago (posted pictures of this on OTF) and this interesting cross Asctm Sagarik Gold x Paraphalaenopsis serpentilingua which I got yesterday.
