I've never been to Peru, but do all the people who issue the permits do what their supposed to correctly? With so many tourists going there they must have to issue an overwhelming number of permits, letting somethings pass by. I might be wrong though.

I am unsure as to the whole story concerning James Kovach and those permits, but from what I hear, they were valid. Notice how AFTER the plant is published in AOS Orchids that James has all the trouble. Perhaps the Peruvian Govt. had some sort of scheme to retract those permits to benifit themselves or affiliates? Who knows...

Also, Selby Gardens would have told on James Kovach immediately when James walked in the door of the Stark Research Center... they do not need trouble... but also, Selby Gardens kept a division of it in the greenhouses, perhaps because it had proper paperwork to go with it... they do not keep just anything that rolls in... it had to be inpected for pests and diseases, and had to have proper documentation to go along with it. Their collection contains very rare South American orchid species, along with many new species of orchids yet to be described... they don't allow just anyone's stuff to come on in and possibly infect the entire collection...

As for the Peru Govt. disputing the permits, I can almost gaurantee that the reason is not because they wanted it named after their country... I think it has more to do with who in Peru wants the plants, and who it will benifit. Perhaps corruption has play in it...

Okay!!! Enough Taxonomic and Legal Debates!

Let's just enjoy the pretty flowers now...

(and those who can't let it rest - try writing to the appropriate authorities.... whoever that might be, if any!)

I for one am exceptionally skeptical when it comes to ANYONE and illegal slippers, hobbyist smugglers, selby, AOS, the pope, anyone. people have shown time and again that they are completely ILLOGICAL when it comes to these things. I can tell you one thing, if the next hot slipper somehow drops into my lap and I felt I stood a good chance of not getting busted, it wouldn't be turned aside, that's for sure. at least I'm being honest about that fact.
