Default Paph. philippinense - supposed to be.

At a reasonable cost I purchased this plant as Paph. philippinense. The buds looked different to othe phils' I've flowered. Different, you bet. This is the first flower, half open now. Any guesses at a name ? I have 2 picked out.

Hi Roy, I'm gonna guess Paph philippinense x haynaldianum... reason being... petals and dorsal stripe would have come from philippinense... and then haynaldianum would have given the spotting on the lower part of the dorsal.

btw, i know it's annoying to get a mislabeled plant, but this one looks so nice with the petal colour... hopefully the dorsal opens up more too and it will definitely go in the keeper list.

    cheers

Tim, I'm thinking lebaudyanum also but elsewhere there is dicussion on it being a hybrid of that or Berenice with haynaldianum. I'm trying to find a pic of P. Burning Phil. I saw one somewhere which rings a bell with this one but I can't find it.

I guess, you will have to factor in what kind of hybrids are being sold around Oz as well. Also if you have records of where this plant came from, you can always ask the originator what they were mucking around with as far hybrids...

Tim, I know where the plant came from but the seller did a little breeding work but used to have a lot of everyone elses seedlings and I suppose plants of seedlings that didn't sell. His record of correct labels has been questioned before but I didn't find out till after I had purchased a number of plants. I've flowered 2 now from him wrong labels but 4 others that have been ok. I have about 8 more plants to flower, 4 I think are correct by the leaf patterns, 4 have me worried as I will be able tell if they are correct on flowering.

Me too. And I always learn something to boot! After reading that it might be
lebaudyanum, I started googling it and haynaldianum. I am leaning more toward haynaldianum now, but I guess we will know more when it opens fully.

    Cheers,
    BD

The one flower is open more today, one pic of the flower and the petals are dropping plus a pic of the staminode.
