    Default Phragmipedium besseae var. flavum

A first bloom on this small plant to start off year 2009. This one has a parentage of 'Wings of Gold' x self. It's one of two plants of this selfing that I own.

Phrag beseae var. flavum is the yellow form of the normally red slipper species. This variety was first decribed scientifically in 1990. Through breeding the shapes of the flavum blooms have been getting better, as well as increased ease in cultivation. I've read about the difficulty of some flavum, but I find ('Wings of Gold' x self) to be the same as a normal besseae (so far). I believe F4 generation plants are now for sale too in USA and I think these will also be easier to grow too.

My plant is a very pale one (compared to one I saw at a orchid show). My camera takes the bloom as nearly white so I had to colour adjust the blue spectrum of the photo to make it a more accurate yellow. I'm pleased with it, thanks for looking

Wow, Fren, she is a beauty! And her form is very nice for a flavum. I like the pale yellow more than a fully saturated yellow. Good growing!

Beautiful, and the clonal name is most appropriate!

Congratulations, Fren, she's a beauty. I see my grampa in your bloom lol. Squinty eyes, large glasses, big nose, and no teeth. He was perfect to me, and so is your lovely phrag.
