Default Paph. Harrisianum 'G.S. Ball' AM/RHS

Here's a bit of history that I found earlier this year.

Paph. Harrisianum ‘G.S. Ball’AM/RHS is barbatum x villosum. This thing grows like a weed!!! The leaf span on this division is 18" although the leaves grow more "upright" then horizontal. The stem is thick and requires no staking. I have it in a four inch pot. It has a total of three growths (2 PB/1 in bloom). Looking for multiple leads any time now!

Apparently this was the first paph hybrid and was registered in 1869. The flowers are large deep red with dark striped dorsal and petals. These plants are supposed to flower several times a year.

Can anyone tell me when and where this plant was awarded?

Garland, I don't see a record for that particular clone. However, Harrisianum with an FCC/RHS was exhibited by a "Clark Day Jr.", of Cerritos CA. The plant was judged at the Pacific South Regional Supplemental monthly judging in Long Beach, CA on June 23rd, 1980.

    Hope that helps you some.

Probably awarded a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. I have never been able to find information on RHS awards, especially the old ones.

    Default Harrisianum G.S. Ball

Paph. Harrisianum was awarded it's FCC/RHS on Feb 16 1869. Following typical RHS fashion, it was awarded without a clonal name (historically, the first award to a grex does not recieve a clonal name recognized by the RHS), but according to research to create "Parade of Paphiopedilum" in the late 1970s, the clonal name of the FCC/RHS plant is "informally" 'G.S. Ball'.

This is from RHS Awards CD...a worthwhile if expensive investment from the RHS...
