Default My sister's bizarro peloric paph...

Well, it is a pretty color, but the form is a bit, er, off, I'd say! The petals never really separated from around the pouch, so it is sort of being cradled in them. I think it looks either like it has a secret, or a cold nose! Maybe one for the compost pile, but I didn't want to insult my sister or anything!

This is Paphiopedilum 'Spring Hills' x 'Gladstone'.

I would give it another bloom chance before I composted it....might do OK the next time. It sure wouldn't win any paph beauty contests though.

    Haha, nope.
She said it bloomed fine the first time (she bought it in bloom though.) I'm wondering about light...maybe not enough light or humidity (I've been watching the light here, she get's a ton of southern light, and yet her plants aren't placed near or in it!) or maybe it is just a mess.

Well if it bloomed fine before it can't be peloric, just mal-nourished or dry. Something about the culture isn't allowing the new growths or blooms to develop fully. Why don't you take it off her hands and show her how a pro does it!!!?? I'm sure under the right culture, this plant will flourish!

It looks like a nice solid green complex.

BTW, my Paph. Druid Spring (druryi x prim?) did the same thing last time around. In fact, the petals were tucked INTO the pouch!

I'm going to give it one more chance to straighten up or it goes to the Salad Shooter!

Well, she loves it, either way, so I doubt it is destined for the salad shooter, but I grilled her just now on its' culture. She's moved in here just 6 weeks ago. Says the plant grew and spiked in her south facing window in the old place. Bloomed here though, been in not as bright sun, in front of a fire place which she's used 10x since moving in. When we opened the door to stoke the fire and I smelled the smoke, I wondered if maybe that may have had something to do w/ it. Any thoughts?

no idea if smoke will do it. change of conditions may certainly contribute. the color does look real nice though.

I agree, give it another chance! Poor little thing needs to adapt to it's new home.

A fire about 10 times in six weeks...assuming she's somewhere nearby she's also getting pretty cold weather now. I'd guess the humidity is somewhere under 20% with the fire place cranking. And that's pretty arid for a paph. Could be a moisture thing.

Does she use pebble trays or humidifiers anywhere nearby?
