LOL! Julie, that "wall" of snow is actually a hill, so it is a bit deceiving. Besides, you guys out there got WAY more snow than we did here. We only got a couple feet!

The petals are 9" long on the newer bloom, but will shrink about an inch (that's what the other did) as they continue to twist.

Sort of like a perm kinking?

    Julie

PS - I hear the Cape is a mess. It only stopped snowing down there this morning. I think I'm going to bag going down for the orchid show. I think the NH one next month is much bigger anyway.

Heather, the shots you have are terrific, but I'm one of those 'perfection is not sufficient' types. I'm thinking if you could shoot the silhouette you did today (same time of day, same sunlight) with a diffuse foreground light that lights but doesn't wash out the front side of the chids, you'd have some shot.

Of course, it might stink and I could be totally wrong...but it looks like you have some great stuff to work with here.

    Julie

PS - It gives you something else to think about than the snow...

Thanks Julie! Sounds like a good suggestion. I too am an over-achiever when it comes to this sort of thing! I'm not sure how to get more lighting in front. I've also tried photographing w/ sun in front of the plant, to no avail. These last attempts were done w/ me covering the flash w/ a folded in half business card (unfolded it was still over exposed) so that's the closest I've gotten to getting something in focus w/ less glare.

I'm afraid I'm about done trying. I've taken 81 photos of this plant, not including probably another 150 (at least!) that got trashed, and unfortunately, I don't think the plant will still be in bloom when I return from vacation. Anyway, I'm still learning how to improve my photography, for sure!

~H<----off to photograph some beaches for a change...

Thanks a lot, Heather.... your photos just cost me $150.

Photos of same to be posted soon from me... I need help...

P.S. Check out my new signature. I'm living proof that it is the truth.

(I have a PG-13 rated orchid-related signature quote that I'm saving for the future...with Louis's permission, of course.)

ROFLMAO! I love the quote! In fact, I have a dog show friend I'm going to drag all through it!

    Good one, Garland!

And Heather, have a great vaca!
