    Default Paphiopedilum Chen Samn Colorful

    Hi all,

I got this at my OS show last March and have been eagerly waiting for this bloom. It's a cross between a very vini Maudiae type (Paph Red Shift) and delenatii. It was mislabeled as Paph Chen Samn 'Colorful', suggesting it's a clone of Chen Samn, but Orchid Wiz says there's no such plant as just Chen Samn--it does, however, list Chen Samn Colorful. Not for everyone, because some don't like vinis, but for those who do, well, all I can say is this is a color I really associate more with Catts & Phals, not Paphs!

The shape reflects both parents, but the color of the bloom obviously is more like the vini hybrid parent.

Because I think the leaves are just stunning all by themselves, I had to include this one taken about two weeks before the bloom opened. Although Maudiae types have nice mottling in their foliage, delenatii blows them out of the water in that regard and I'm pleased it predominates in this respect. Thanks for looking and hope you like.

    Cheers,
    Rob

The leaves are gorgeous! And I love the colour shade of this bloom (burgundy-mauve) Now this is not a paph cross seen often, and not the typical paph colour either. I think it turned out nice! Hopefully its second blooming will be even better.
    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi all,

Thanks for the nice comments. Fren, unfortunately this isn't a first time blooming for it, or at least there is an older growth (not visible in any of the photos) with the stump of a flower spike on it. So I fear it's not likely to be any better next time around. Not sure if the plant was a division of a really large plant or if it was just an individual plant that was well grown to beyond first bloom stage when it was for sale. I sort of incline toward the former view, as there were several others for sale, all with very similar leaves. Mind you, perhaps most of the seedlings just inherited the same leaf color & pattern. I did see a photo from someone who bloomed one and the flower on it wasn't great--quite badly deformed, and I think it was much paler (although that could have been an artifact of the photo). At any rate, while it'll probably never be award worthy, I still like the flower!

    Cheers,
    Rob
