    Default Paphiopedilum niveum (?)

Bought this one about a year ago and just got it blooming again.
The tag on it reads Paphiopedilum niveum but having looked at some photo's on the web I have my doubts.

It is not a pure specie but a niveum hybrid. It looks a bit like niveum X haynaldianum var. album that I used to have.

    Nice flower!

I think it is a hybrid as well. Hard for me to say what it is.

I highly doubt that it is niveum X haynaldianum var. album. the staminode is too deeply coloured for this hybrid.

In fact it is the round, dark pink staminode that stumps me. The staminode can tell you a lot about the parentage. Niveum has a white staminode, with some hits of green, this plant has a deep coloured staminode. If niveum was in its genes, it would have had to be crossed into a plant with a deeper staminode. Or it may not have niveum in it at all.

Could it be Paph niveum X Paph victoria-regina = Paph Chaipricha, registered in 1995? I have not seen any of these plants nor can I find photos, but I only suggest it because I think this cross may produce blooms like this. I don't know at this point,

Paph Ron Williamson is out of the question because they have light green staminodes.

Paph deperle (delenatii x primulinum) was on my thoughts, again the staminode is not correct on your plant (I don't know how your plant has a pink staminode). There is slight potential it is this though.

I cannot give you an striaght answer. Hopefully someone can, perhaps the vendor could. They would know the stock and where the plants were on the bench. Plants close togeth may have has an accidental switch of tag.

It is a lovely bloom none the less, and enjoy it even if you don't know the parentage for sure.

Paph deperle is still on my mind. Is your photo colour correct?

No it is not a niveum. The pouch is all wrong; but it does indicate that it is a cross with one of the paphio from the parvisepalum section.

I agree with Fren and Cattan it's parvisepalum hybrid might be Pap. diperle.

Having looked now at some pictures of Paph. deperle I do share your opinion that it comes indeed pretty close.

    Many thanks!!

Paph. deperle does look very similar.
