    Smile Paphiopedilum Maudii in bud

I bought this plant last year, not knowing if I could grow them The flower lasted about 2 months. It's been kept in a shaded West window, much of the year gloomy. I repotted in a commercial orchid mix and feed weakly weekly. About 2 months ago a spike started to appear. Now it is SO CLOSE to blooming. Looks to me like "Audrey" in "Little Shop of Horrors". I realize these are probably simple for experienced growers, but it's very exciting for me to see it bloom from an entirely new growth.

Hahaha! Sure looks close to Audrey .... anytime when she blooms she'll probably start singing to you "Feed me ..."

Anyway, you sure have a cool and great growing Paph there. I'm not too lucky with my Paphs lately except for the local Philippine species which appear to be doing well.

Daniel, anytime you can get a plant to rebloom. It means that you are doing what the plant needs. I have killed my share of plants, this was one of them. Darn mites took hold !! Some paph.s are easier than others to grow. I say Good Job !! Have Fun,Rich

A good vigorous Maudiae-type grows like a weed if you make it happy. With new growth coming on too you have clearly made it happy. Good work.

Anytime you get a spike to bud and then get the bud to bloom without anything bad happening to the spike or bud...you did good! So many times, even those who have rebloomed a few have their mishaps, bug attacks, etc. I still act like a kid when I find a spike or bud peeking out. Enjoy...

Daniel I just purchased a Paphiopedium Memoria Nicholas Hamann hybrid and when I first saw the bloom I also thought of 'The Little Shop Of Horrors' and the Audrey plant. These two Paphs. look very much a like including the beautiful leaves, a added bonus. These open slowly, but they are worth the wait. I bought mine in bloom which is nice, but you raised yours to bloom which means more now and in the future---more blooms.

Yes Daniel, that is indeed a wonderful specimen. I agree with you, it looks like it could just snap up and eat anything that passes nearby! Can't wait until you post a pic of the open bloom. Good Luck!
