    Default Paph. vietnamense

    First bloom, from Antec flasks.

This is not my plant or photograph, but belongs rather to our friends Le and Jay in Virginia, in whose greenhouse I used to work summers, years and years ago, and who taught me much of what I know about orchid plants. We've remained excellent friends over the years.

Anticipating retirement, they took down their website, sold off most of their stock at ridiculously low prices, and were about to sell their property, but the deal fell through at the last minute.

(I'm kind of happy about that; frankly, I don't know what Le would do without his orchids!)

Anyway, they just sent me this pic, and I thought I'd put it up. They have these for sale again, I'm sure, (not cheaply, given the scarcity), but for contact info if you're interested in one, just PM me.

    Enjoy the pic!

Can you give us a clue as to what asking price might be? More than the cost of a breadbox, more than a new car?

That is a great photograph. The detail is nice... I've never seen one of these before. Looks like a neat orchid to grow. Anyone have the skinny on growing needs....typical Paph. or more specialized?

Hard to tell--both ho chih minh and vietnamense at Antec's site have rounder pouches than this one. Petals on the vietnamense there aren't as round as this one though, but there's lots of variation in other vietnamense pics online.

Don't know. Antec's been pretty reliable--I sure hope they didn't send them the delenatii hybrid instead.

I'm no expert in vietnamense...but it seems that most of them have dog-eared petals with significant pink/violet, although a few do have nice round petals. Maybe this is one of those...because this one really has nice form!

addendum: It seems from the pics of antec's vietnamense that the staminodes are large, yellow & green, but with no hints of red. del, on the other hand, has a lot of red in the staminode. There's a pic of ho chi minh on antec's cover page now that shows significant red. I would suggest that they email antec to see what they think.

Don't know Jason. I'm a little worried now that you brought this up--the petals here seem just way too round and pale. Third pic down at this site http://paphs.net/media/Paphs/viet.htm looks the most similar to me, but there's still too much overlap on the pic here between petals and dorsal, and the color isn't right either. What do you think? Worth them sending a pic in to Antec and asking what gives?
