From a plant that was once sad to one that is now glad that it's you who rescued it. This is obviously mutual admiration. AL

Thank you all for your very kind and positive comments on my Phragmipedium caudatum. Here I have added some more photos to show its actual flower distribution and the plant in flower relative to a person. In this case, my orchid greenhouse assistant Charlie, who manages to keep the plants growing well and affords me the freedom to depart to foreign lands in search of new adventures with orchids and encouraging their protection as land development takes its toll on their ever decreasing habitats.

Beautiful blooms and plant! I am really getting into Phrags---they are so elegant. I really envy you living where you do. I love Costa Rica!

I find it interesting that you are using a coco mix ; I have had a large bag of coco-nut husk chunks hanging about for some time, and having run out of large (vanda size) bark, used these chunks in a mix, and used some for a few Phrags repotted over the last few months, and only this morning I was thinking that they are looking good. One to remember !

I am using more of the coconut husk chunks mixed with charcoal and some medium Pearlite or pummice stone as growing medium for a number of my orchids. Added to this I also use a top dressing of a slow release pellet fertilizer 13-13-13 There is the need to overnight soak and wash the coconut husk thoroughly with freshwater for at least three times to remove most of the salt. With my watering regimen this is a wonderful medium and so far I have found nothing negative with its use on my orchids. They love it.

Supposedly - according to a guy who was slling the stuff in UK some years ago , it lasts twice as long as bark before it breaks down and needs replacing.

Congratulations on the rescue and bringing this baby back to health. Its amazing how it came from a sorry looking plant into a healthy specimen, great job indeed.
