I was reading an article on the "bulldog" paphs the other night. In my opinion, none of them can match the elegant beauty of species paphs like this. Love it.

This thought is not unusual, Complex paphs have a uniqueness/style about them that not all Paph / orchid growers like. I personally love them as do many others. Same goes for most other orchids.

We used to refer to the complex paphs as 'tea-cup' paphs due to their round and cupped form. These were generally accepted as the 'standard' for paphs. I think the 'bulldog' part came into use in the 1950s and 60s when Paph Winston Churchill was all the rage then. Many Winston Churchills were tetraploids and thus were used extensively in hybridising, particularly the varieties 'Indomitable' and 'Redoubtable'. The 'bulldog' of course, refers to that indomitable spirit of doggedness and tenacity of the British during the darkest days of WW2, as exemplified by Winston Churchill himself. The round shape of the paphs too reflected the face of the bulldog and Winston himself. That famous photograph of Churchill by the great portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh best illustrates this.

BTW I like all paphs - the teacups for their formal shape and presentation and the others for their more informal character. Something like top-hats and tailcoats VS jeans and denim.
