Thanks Paul for raising this issue, quite interesting.

Here in chilly old UK it was a beginners orchid - the beginner was assumed to have a cool house - winter night temperature down to 10 or even 8 - and was grown alongside Cymbidiums and Odontoglossums.
it became known as a cottage garden orchid ( meaning that one of the many gardeners at the big house owned by Lord whatever , would pinch a bit and keep it on his window-sill).
I can't grow it well - my cattleya/vanda/paph but mostly hybrids conditions are too warm.
I have seen this particular form before - the species is grown for cut flowers in Madeira (Atlantic island) , and sold in the market at Funchal ; the type species flowers a couple of weeks before this form, so this is grown to extend the season.
I once saw a lecture by the late Joyce Stewart ( co-author Angraecoid Orchids, etc etc, ) when she showed slides of 50 different forms of Paph insigne , and when I held the UK National coillection of paphs I set out to collect them - but gave up, I reckon most of those are now lost , and since the species was so widely collected, and much of its habitat has been destroyed, are now lost for ever; a sad thought.
No-one knows where this particular form came from ; : I found, upon enquiry, one very knowledgable and experienced orchid person on the Island (Madeira) who hazarded a guess that it was a chance hybrid between two of the known sub-species of P.insigne ; these are ssp. boxalli, annamense, insigne itself ( i.e. P.insigne ssp.insigne), sanderae, and sanderiana ( personally I think that the last ought to be a species in it's own right, but that's another story.
    I ramble on too long.
Geoff very nice information I know is not that easy to grow this species but really love the shape, the color and long lasting too, so sad to hear difficult to find in their original habitat .Thanks Geoff.

Oh, Paph. insigne. I thought it might have been Paph. barbigerum since it looked so similar to the one I had.

    Cheers,

Nice purchase. I am more inclined to believe your plant is gratrixianum or affine. The shape and stance of the petals resemble gratrixianum or affine more than insigne.

Beautiful bloom, Zain! Congratulations on purchasing this plant. Now you may need to figure out the real name of your plant. I'm not sure of what it is (would love to add to my collection anyways!), but if it is Paph insigne, I know quite a few people in Bangalore who cultivate it very easily. My plant did not bloom last year, but bloomed for me this year. Actually, I think 2 more blooms are still on the plant. I just grow it in shade with bright indirect light. It is pretty hot in summer in Bangalore (37 centigrade) and does not get very cold here, maybe dropping to 10 centigrade at night in winter. Need to re-pot it once the temperatures begin to warm a bit in February. I posted my ladies slipper pictures some time back:
