    Default Paph exul in Bloom

My Paph exul is in bloom. The flower is rather small, height 3 ins and lateral spread 2 1//2 ins. The unique feature of the flower that sets it apart from Paph insigne and gratrixianum is the large synsepal, which extends beyond the pouch and is almost as large as the dorsal sepal. Mine comes from the the limestone hills of Peninsular Thailand whose climate is almost like the one in my home state. So for me it is quite easy to grow and bloom.

@Nicki : I found time to photograph the bloom this morning.

What a beauty. It looks artificial! That's a compliment. Could you share what are the environmental conditions are where you have it growing?

Paph exul is an orchid of Peninsular Thailand just like niveum and concolor, These orchids are found in sunny locations near the coasts and islands, usually in kaarst(limestone) areas.Niveums stray as far south as Kedah, northern Peninsular Malaysia, where I live. The climate is best described as semi-tropical monsoon i.e. with 2 distinct seasons - short, cool and dry 'winter' from Dec to Feb, meaning it doesn't rain for 3 months, with day temp in the low 30C (85-90F) and night temp around mid 20C (75-80F). The rest of the year temps are in the mid 80 - mid 90F - very humid and wet, with heavy rainfall from May to Oct or even into Nov. Annual rainfall is more than 100 inches. These are the climatic conditions for Paphs in the Brachypetalum section. You'd be surprised that some of these Brachys like the niveum and concolor can grow almost to the water's edge near the coast and exposed to the full sun for half the day.

I hope I have given you an idea of our environment. Thanks, Bob, for looking in and your comments.
