    Default Paphiopedilum Bel Royal

Hi everyone - Phillip took these photos of my Paph. Bel Royal, a primary hybrid between Paph. kolopakingii and Paph. rothschildianum. It has had to live up to a lot, since the rothschildianum pod parent is 'Charles E., FCC/AOS'. Paph kolopakingii is also an amazing species - it can have up to 14 blooms on a single stem! As might be expected, it is often used in hybridizing to increase flower count. In this case there are five blooms (2 still buds), but some specimens have up eight or nine. The stem has to be particularly sturdy, especially when it is particularly long. This one is mid-sized - about 25 inches, or 53 centimeters.

As usual, Phillip's photography makes it look better than it looks in real life!

Beautiful blooms, beautifully photographed!! I have a mature Paph kolopakingii and can't wait to see the first blooms, but so far no signs yet.

Wonderful photos. Great blooms. But, I LOVE the look of the buds. Such a nice peek at what's to come.
