    Default Paphiopedilum Berenice

    Hi everyone -

This is Paph. Berenice, a very old primary hybrid between Paph. lowii and Paph. philippinense; it was first hybridized in 1891, and since has become somewhat of a stepchild to Paph. Julius, which is Paph. lowii by Paph. rothschildianum - hard to beat those parents! Personally, Paph. Julius reminds me of a basset hound, and I love the predominance of the lowii influence on Berenice. I do know that a good form of Berenice should have rich reds and yellows, as well as longer, more twisted petals , and this one does, although it's very young, and thus does not sport 5 or six blooms. I'd say there are three, and optimistically, maybe four, on this one. If anyone knows of a lowii hybrid that emphasizes the lowii green-and-grape color combination, I'd love to know about it. (Otherwise I might just collect the species for the foreseeable future)

What a beauty, Maura!!!!This Berenice has combined the best of both parents. I adore Polyantha hybrids but unfortunately very difficult to find here. BTW great shot - lovely lighting.
