    Default Alien Paph

This is a paph that I saw at a local botanical garden in their orchid room in the conservatory. It really does have a second bud growing out of the pouch of the first flower. Anyone know how common this is? Unfortunately I didn't get a look at the name tag. Was too dumbfounded by the flower(s).

I'd guess some Maudiae-type crossed with some coryopedilum. maybe a philippinense hybrid. maybe even sanderianum if those petals aren't done growing yet. or stonei, who knows.

What would be interesting to find out is if the 2nd bud if it opens has a bud grow out of it. It would also be fun to see if this could be duplicated reliably.

LOL, that looks so cool though.... but I'm with Jason and Slipperhead, looks like someone broke a flower from a phrag and thought "hey if I stick it in there, no one would notice"

    cheers

I'm honestly kind of bummed that everyone thinks this is a fake. If it is, I certainly didn't waste my time trying to superglue two flowers together. And considering the reputation of the Gardens where I took this picture, I don't think anyone there would have done it either. I'll see if I can get back to the Gardens to see if the second bud is open. If it is indeed a fake, I was fooled too.

Don't be bummed - after all, we do live in a world where it seems every picture has been 'edited'. But it would be cool if you could go back and take another look and see if the bloom opened. I would think that this is a one time hiccup in the plants' blooming, that perhaps the multifloral spike got off track or something. Let us know!!

I guess it didn't cross my mind that it was a fake. I had a Paph. primulinum do this, although the flower preceding the bud was mutated, unlike this one... I took it to a reputable species grower here and he said that many Paph.s on their first or second blooming have a tendency to mutate, especially on the later flowers on the spike, and he concurred with me that the next bud was forming from the stem of the previous flower rather than from the spike itself. Here is a link to the photo of my plant, which although not as obvious as your photo shows that this can happen: www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchidtalk/showthread.php?t=2874
