i have bought a few of these in bud myself over the years, and the flowers never seem to open all the way, the top sepal slays flopped down over the front of the flower. not sure what i am doing wrong. if i ever get another i have decided i must buy one in full open flower, even if it costs so much more. if i see one like this i would snag it in a second! great deep wine color. i love these flowers. and the shape is so graceful. very nice!

Thanks. I am not a paph expert but I think the problem with your Maudie paphs not opening completely might be related to temperature. It could be they are a little too warm. So maybe when the buds start opening you could lower somehow the temperature a few degrees. the blooms opens slower but more fully. At least this is what I did, when the bloom on this paph was half open I brought the paph to my office where it has only shielded sunlight and the window is cracked open permanently.

I'm not a Paph expert, Andrea, but I'm pretty sure that from those petals it isn't straight Maudiae. Some nurseries now use Maudiae vinicolor to indicate the type of flower, rather than the exact parents. Maudiae is a primary cross between callosum and lawrenceanum. Maudiae may have a few warts but nothing like that. Also, yours has form and color that just may be award quality. Congratulations on an incredibly beautiful Paph.

Thanks Wade, I was wondering that this paph has so many warts, but I asked the growers and since they import them too, I think if anyone knew the parentage of this paph the information got lost on the way. All that could say that this is from a different import batch than the first paph, and I knew the bloom might look different because the leaves looked also a little different.
