Bought this a few weeks back and it has now opened, almost fully. I expect the petals to become a bit more perpendicular and the top sepal to stand more upright. I hope I used the correct part names of the flower.
The image came out so detailed, I had to share it!
I like it! Nice picture!
appletonianum is one of my old time favourites. I saw it for the 1st time at the 1st Paph Symposium I attended in South Africa when the late Prof Walter Bertsch was the guest speaker.
Wow. looks like you were on Paph. buying spree.
Yes, let's just call it a 'spree-let'.
Added 4 from various out of state growers. Like I said, paphs are quickly becoming my favorite type. I have 5 different in bloom sitting on the end table and IMO, it is quite lovely to see them together.
I have a Paph. fairrieanum (fairrieanum 'Red' AM/AOS x fairrieanum 'OZ') on its way too also in spike or bloom. Also a very cool looking paph. Tall spike for the flower to perch on (says a compact grower but 10"-12" tall spike).
A very nice appletonianum. I'll have to replace the one that died . Not easy to find though
One of my favorite species. I wish its hybrids were more commonly seen.
Thanks for the info! I love 'em.
Besides the beauty of a lady slipper flower, the longevity of the bloom is excellent. The ones I have had in bloom were purchased that way but still lasted close to 6 weeks minimum. No telling how long they were in bloom before I came into their lives.
I'll soon know how long these flowers last. Any thoughts on how long an Appletonianum flower lasts?
I don't think of Paph appletonianum as having particularly long-lasting flowers, but I'd certainly expect more than 6 weeks in ideal conditions. As you said, no telling how long they are in bloom before you get them, and the stress of transportation and any change in conditions does not help. Maintain humidity, slightly cooler temps and slightly decreased light for maximum flower life.
Here is another nice shot of the flower and another in the background.
