Default Paph henryanum- a dissapointment at the end of the road

Getting this paph henryanum was quite a story. I ordered a paph. henryanum from my favorite vendor 2 years ago. I arrived, bloomed in autumn same year, revealing a beautiful paph. vilosum bloom. I had written to my vendors telling them about the right tag wrong plant situation. They admited it was their fault and offer me the value of the paph henryanum as discount on my next buy from them. I got to keep the paph vilosum for free. I waited for more than a year for them to have paph henryanum in offer again, when they finally had it, it was more expensive and a new Taiwan import with some leave damage, I said to them as long as the plant is otherwise healthy I wanted. So I finally got the paph. henryanum. O month after it arrived it started forming a spike.
It opened 2 days ago and to my disappointment the lateral sepals are not fused and the whole bloom is lopsided. Since is started growing a second spike I hope the second bloom is OK and this to be only a freak accident

Don't let that disappoint you - I've seen plants have a split synsepal one flowering, then fused at other times.

I have a parvi/multifloral hybrid that has bloomed deformed for the last 5 years. I intend to throw it away, but always end up waiting "just one more flowering...." It opened a blossom about a month ago - same result, so i set it near the door of the greenhouse so I'd remember to pitch it. Wouldn't you know a second bud opened that was perfect!

I think the plants do that crap intentionally, just to get our goats.

If you noticed a spike so soon after the plant was shipped it was already starting to form when the plant went though the stress of shipping and a new environment. More than enough to cause a problematic flower. The next flower will probably be perfectly normal. Good luck.

    Andrea-
How is the 2nd spike? Did it open?

I have 2 of these both in spike now too. 1 was a replacement for a bad delivery, I did not have to return it. Appears to have recovered from its trip.
