    Default $1.99 Paph Julius

Well, okay it wasn't $1.99, but it was a bargain and a great story to boot!

Hoa and I were at one of the local growers, where Hoa has been before. We had just started wandering around the first greenhouse and spotted some nice paphs. Well. I'm not going to skip looking at paphs. One blooming paph sat sort of out of place, a multifloral, lowii looking one mixed in with a bunch of bulldogs. I immediately snatched it up and looked for a tag. No tag. No price. Hoa says "we'll ask ------- what it is and what he wants for it".

Well, -------- is very distracted, has a huge line of people waiting to buy plants, doesn't have enough staff, etc. (I think maybe Hoa planned this -- I'm not sure). So Hoa stops him and asks him about my paph and his phal that he had picked up. ------- says - "Where did you get that? You reached across the table!! (table filled with paphs). That's all closed off, you aren't suppose to be in there!" Well, the area was not closed off, no signs or anything, so we just went in. I was pretty startled, and told the man that I was sorry, the plant was sitting in with the bulldogs (which were for sale). Now, he had about a half a dozen people trying to get his attention, so he said "what is it?" And I replied that it had no tag and no price. He shook his head and said "I don't know what it is - just take it, $25."

As soon as he leaves, Hoa comes up to me and says he knows what the plant is, and it is a bargain. We continue to shop and I buy about 8 plants from this place. As we are leaving the nursery, Hoa says that the plant is a Paph Julius. I honestly don't know what a Julius is worth, but any multi-growth blooming multifloral paph for $25 is a good deal.

We go on to the show, and while there I come across a paph vendor who happens to have a very large plant of the same type, in bloom. I try to pull it out so I can read the tag, the helper comes up and asks to assist me. I ask him what the name of the plant is, and he says, it is Julius. The plant has 7 growths, and is very healthy and large. I ask what the price is and he tells me $350.

Hoa and I link up again later and I tell him about the plant I saw. He wants to go check it out and so we go back. Hoa knows the vendor, who was a jerk.. But when Hoa tries looking at the plant the vendor gets all upset and tells him not to touch it because he has sold it to someone for - - - $450!!! An amazing pricing change... So anyway, I feel like I really got myself a bargain!

funny story about a kerfuffled vendor and as for the other one who isn't too nice... hmmm... would it be too mean to ask for a plague of locusts in his bathroom???

The Julius is one of my favorite primary hybrids! And you're right, a multi-growth one is a steal at many times the price!

How many growths does yours have?

It certainly is a looker! Nice find and better story!

Julius is a great bargain alright! I was stunned when I heard James, the owner of the nursery willing to let it go for $25, a two growth multifloral paphs! From the look of the bloom, we could figure out the name almost right away if you are familiar with multifloral paph crosses! A BS plant could go easily for $100 or more and with one in bloom like that, the asking price would be even higher! Diane, post more picture as more blooms open and mature!
Regarding the vendor, I was boiling when he went on and on about touching his plant. Well, after he finished, I gave him a dose of his own medicine for his most recent trespass, selling me a mislabeled plant with exhorbitant price, well his reputation was on the line with that kind of mistake! He was very contrite after that and invited me to visit his greenhouses, and tried to sell me a "great" phrag species (Should I believe him?)! He should know I bought pretty pricy stuff from him before and did that to me, well ... Kind of fun, thinking about it, as long as no harm done, we should forget this and move on. I like some of his plants though, that's the problem!

    Cheers. Hoa.

    Ok, Hoa...

Here's my wicked thinking... You should call him and accept his Phrag offer, if it's one you want to own. And tell him it's on the condition that it's correctly labeled this time. If that should not prove the case, you'll blacklist him on the orchid forum you belong to.

That should motivate him to get it right this time, you get a Phrag as a much deserved 'make good' for his previous screw up, and your threat is real, because there are other forums where you can discuss vendor quality - it needn't be done here.

Err...I hate cocky vendors. Retail is all about customer service! Mistakes happen, but when they do, the vendors need to own up to them.

Julie, you are right! Next time when I buy a plant from him, I will ask "Is the plant correctly labelled this time?" That will surely get me a discount or maybe a free bonus! Hehehe! He deserves that! If he is that meanie again, I could blacklist him and tell other people about it!
    Cheers. Hoa.
