Default Ann Arbor orchid show ... an awesome Cyp +

This Cyp held me spellbound for a while.

I wish I could grow paphs so I could have one like this

Believe this is the type some refer to as a "toad" or "bulldog"?

They're all amazing, but the Cyp is my easy favorite!

    Ok...

I resisted the impulse after the first post, but can't resist sharing something I recently learned...

Cypripedium is derived from the Greek, Kypris pedion, which translates (with family-style forum whitewashing) to mean: Aphordite's private parts.

I'll never look at a Cyp quite the same again...

Julie, this 'feature' is even more prominent in cypripedium acaule... google around for some 'front-on' pics and focus on the lip.. err... pouch!

Oh yeah, Tim-o! That wasn't lost on me. I've now moved my lovely drawing of Cyp. acaule into the bedroom. Er...a...not for inspirational reasons, but to remove the porn from the more pubic...er, a...I mean public places.

PS - You don't see Cyps much because they're exceedingly difficult to propagate and cultivate. Maybe, with luck, current market pressure for lesser available species will encourage more to take a whack at it. So to speak.

I'm already looking around for possible flask sources for when I go either to Japan next Feb or Florida in 2008... of course, I am not too sure that our 40 degrees celsius would be too good for these babies... so will also have to figure that out first...

There are sources. More will come during the next couple of years, I'm sure.

By a 2008 visit, there may be more available, at more reasonable prices.

    Hi All,
The Cyp is lovely. It looks like Cyp Phillip (macranthos X kentuckiense), but could also be an Aki or Gisela, I suppose. Do you know? You can purchase both hybrids from http://www.hillsidenursery.biz/ within a few months.

BTW, "Kypris pedion" translates to "Shoe of Cyprus", a reference to the slippers only a god would wear in her homeland. Hence the common name for C acaule, Moccasin flower.

    Best,
    Ross
