Default Phrag. Living Fire, a long time coming

I thought I would post a pic of this plant which has finally bloomed for me after about 6 years. I'm pleased with it since it is my first successful long petal Phrag. but it has sure been a journey full of ups and downs.

Does anyone here remember Piper (Julie)? Look her up sometime and you will find many interesting posts. I miss her. This plant was sent to me, by her, back when I still lived in Colorado. It was a tiny flicker of a little seedling at the time. She had bought a flask, if I remember right, and shared the bounty with her friends, taking it upon herself to get people's real life addresses and pack up seedlings and mail them out at her own expense.

I have had lots of setbacks with this poor plant, which I really wanted to keep alive because I got it from Julie. It has been larger, but the growths would yellow and die off. Leaves would get covered with yellow spots, all kinds of things. But now that I have finally bloomed it, I think my culture was inadequate most of that time. I finally put what was left of the plant into a small pot with holes drilled on the sides to allow a small reservoir of water at the bottom. And these days it is only watered with rain water.

I was so shocked to see a sheath forming a few weeks ago; I couldn't believe it! And it has been such fun to watch it develop, and open, and the petals lengthen and redden in color. This year it looks like there may be one more blossom to look forward to, and then it will be back to hoping I can support the plant and allow it to grow in size for next year. There is one new growth coming on.

So Julie, wherever life has taken you, thank you. I wish you well.

Default Thanks for the shout out, BD!

    Lynda!!!

It's so nice to hear that you got the little bugger to bloom! That's an awesome job of growing! Flasklings are a lot of hard work and attention to get to maturity. There's no play book, as you learned. You just keep watching and listening to them and trying to sort out what they most want. Looks like you've done it! Very, very well done!

I see some of my OrchidTalk friends on FaceBook, which is how BD shared you link with me. (Thanks so much BD - you read this one aright!)

I hope all is well with you and I look forward to catching up soon!

    Julie

As to the orchid. No credit here; I did everything wrong so many times. This thing is tough as nails and really wants to live. lol
