    Default Test your orchid IQ!

Just for fun and educational purposes, I am posting a few pictures of one of my babies that finally decided to bloom. I'll give a couple of hints, and if you think you know what the name is, PM me and I'll let you know if you are right.

You can post questions in this thread and I will answer them for everyone to see - except for questions like "what is it's name" and "what are the parents" I will answer yes and no if you want to guess a parent, but once one is identified I won't answer guesses on the second parent... There you have your first clue........

This plant is blooming for the first time after being with me for about 16 months. I thought the blooming growth was mature when I got it - obviously slow growing stock. The second growth is now as large as the first was... (Your second clue)

The flower's lovely maroon markings are little less purple in person. It has a span of 6" between the tips of the twisting petals. Even though this is a first bloom, it has 6 buds/blooms, 3 open, 1 starting to open, The leaf span on the mature growth is 34". (Last clues)

Don't be shy - give it a try!!!

Ok, I will join in the guessing fun!

    Is this a primary hybrid?
Is it a cross between a primary hybrid and a species?

If it is a cross between a primary hybrid and a species, would the species parent be Paph. philippinense? From the look of the twisty petals, I guess there is philippinese somewhere?
Is paph rothchildianum part of the parental lineage?

    So how did I do?
    Cheers. Hoa.

LOL - I got home about an hour ago from NH where I picked up a seedling of this cross (if I guessed it correctly).

Yours is absolutely magnificent, Diane! It gives me something to look forward to while my little itty bitty guy grows big and strong! I'll be sure to post photos of yours nearby to inspire him!

Such a fun idea Diane. Unfortunately, before you can guess, you actually have to know SOMETHING about slippers. So I'm sitting here on the sidelines, enjoying watching and being educated. Keep it up you guys!

Nah...you don't really need to know anything about slippers...you just need to think you do! (As I've proven - her plant is not what I guessed. Except I really think it is, and that she's messing with me!!)

Not that I don't enjoy messin with Julie's mind. Really, it should be fun to follow the clues... Look closely, you have some really major clues.... It's a primary hybrid, it's got phillipinense, ---- go on out and look at that combination of information!!!

I'm horrible with guessing for paphs, phrags. Why don't you post a nice fat intergeneric and I'll be able to play *wink*

I think I know that this bad boy is. the flowers on the primary coryopedilum are rather distinctive, which adds to their appeal, I think.

very tempting plant to grow if it weren't for the SIZE. hint hint.
