Just bought this new plant of Phrag. Sorcerer's Apprentice, with everything - flowers and leaves - much larger and bolder than in the plant I showed in a posting 2 months ago. I have added in some pics of that, as comparison - the flowers there are going off a bit now, due to age, but the differences can be clearly seen.
Now I have two different clones, I have given them varietal names to distinguish , although that is hardly necessary in view of the enormous difference in leaves.
The old, smaller one, I call "Old faithful' and the newer one, bought yesterday at a show I went to, I call "Mem.Eric Young" - in fact the plant came from the famous Eric Young collection in Jersey - one of the Channel Islands, notionally British, but just off the French coast in fact.
I knew Eric - can't say knew him well enough to call him a friend , although he did take me out to dinner, and spent the time trying to persuade me to move to Jersey. I think he was lonely, and wanted intelligent and preferably orchid conversation... He told me the income tax rate there was about 0.0375% ( nine pennies in the old British Pound which had 240 pennies in it) whereas I was paying probably 45% in England, at the time. I told him I loved the idea, the only problem was that if I moved to Jersey I wouldn't have any income to be taxed, as all my clients wanted me on their doorstep in the middle of England.
    Dimensions - "mem Eric Young" - flower natural spread- 14 x 13cm. leaf width/length, 7/70 cm.
    "old Faithful, 10 x 7 cm, and 3/40.
I guess my new acquisition is at least 4n - Eric imported an expert from USA to do chromosome doubling in many of the plants he was breeding.

Btw, in case you are not quite with this - "mem" is an abbreviataion for "memorial" or "in memory of.

And don't ask what it cost - as we say over here - "an arm and a leg" . Still I think I have earned it.

Such a beautiful healthy plant and flowers! A definite treat and as you say well deserved Geoff! When you first mentioned Jersey I thought you meant here in the states. I'll have to research your Jersey. Sounds intriguing. If I may, what profession were you in Geoff?

    A very nice plant, Geoff.

Actually, if I remember correctly - always an "iffy" proposition - "mem" in orchid names is the abbreviation for "memoria", Latin for memory.

Memoria - exactly - in memory of the late....

Jersey . Not New Jersey, but the original one.
Eric Young was said to own or part-own most of the jewellers shops in the island,
at a time when people went there, partly as a winter holiday ( the climate is that
bit warmer and softer than southern UK ) but also to buy gold - probably no sales
Tax etc., and certainly he was quite a rich guy. He had no one to leave his money to,
and had a remarkable orchid collection, employed several growers etc . Etc., and set up
The Eric Young Orchid Foundation before he died. The last time I visited, maybe-nearly
30 years ago ( I don’t actually like the island very much ) there were 5 greenhouses,
each 120 feet long and 30 feet wide, all automated with light controlling blinds which went
up and down as the sun came out or went in, etc...their object is to win medals and awards,
so they don’t always grow the kind of things I like, but their standard of culture is second to
none. But it takes all sorts to make a world, and I’ll lift my glass to the memory of Eric Young.

(I am having a solitary lunch , of course - my wife is in a nearby nursing home. - will come home
In about 10 days when I have sorted out a daily visiting nurse to help her).
I went and saw her this morning , and she looked a little better - but recovery is slow when your
Next birthday is your 91st. Will go back this afternoon to take her some soup I have been making this morning , for her tea( if she can be persuaded to eat anything ) helping to build up her strength.

And Sheryl, I was a Patent Attorney, specialising in work for clients handling cases outside of Uk - in Japan, India, Switzerland, etc wherever their needs arose. Originally specialising in aerospace, but eventually handling everything from heart pacemakers to automatic rain sensing windscreen wipers - which was actually my last case - teaching 9 judges in a German Court about chaos theory.....( I won that one, acting for a Us company ).Happy days....
