Default Cyp season is upon us

So, I went out in the woods at a nearby privately owned (but the public can go and hike) wooded area and I saw these little gems. There are around 120 in bloom, scattered throughout the area. I just shot these before the rains started to move in.

We have a few more weeks before these stop blooming, so I hope to get out there and take down actual numbers, sizes and such for this year's survey plots. Woo-hoo for the second year of the survey

Beautiful! Wish I could take a walk and find some of those around here! It really is nice to see pics of orchids in their natural environment.

These are nice. My house is on a few acres and most of it is wooded. I have many of these spread around my property. They bloom religiously every spring. I tried counting them last year but gave up when I got into the high 200's. I have to be carfeful not to step on them when walking around in the back though. if you are not paying attention it is easy to step on them because they will tend to blend in.

Beautiful Cypripedium acaule! I still have to see a wild orchid here, I think there is a trail outside of the city that society members are gathering.

The cyps are just starting here in Canada.

but look at the C. calceolus in your avatar! I would love to see those in the wild. I watched a program on Plitvice, a national park in Croatia...they were gorgeous.

    Default wow!

Beautiful. We're not so lucky here...

Native Texas orchids look like weeds to me (even though we have 54 native species)...most Spiranthes, Corallorhiza..blah..

Even though Cyps are supposed to be native here, I've never seen them..even in deep East Texas (must be unlucky, wrong time of year, etc.)

You have to catch the time just right. Around here they only stay in bloom for about 3 weeks.
