    Default Paph the Second Founding

    Hi All,

I don't have too much time for posting these days but I didn't want to keep this from you.

The Ho Chi Minh opened nicely and the other pics are of some of the second team sneaking up on them (Ho Chi Minh & Jogjae buds).

I also gave all of them a personal humidity tray (lucky them).

If I could grow paphs and not kill them, Ho Chi Min is the type I'd want.

    Nice growing

Just wondering if the following is normal for paphs; when the second bud started growing and cracked open the beautiful first bulb that wasn't even wilting anymore was just discarded? I'm so sad since it hasn't been open for that long yet. Is it a normal procedure for paphs to cancel the open flower when the next bud cracks open? btw it was the Jogjae that did this, just wondering if I can expect the Ho Chi Minh to do the same?
    Thanks.

I find that paphs show signs on the bloom (such as getting slightly wrinkled or brown spots) before dropping it, though the bloom may still look fine. Phrags are the ones that really drop blooms looking absolutely perfect, I have even glued a bloom back on to take a photo once.

I am assuming you are speaking of the glaucophyllum x glanduliferum, a half cochlopetalum hybrid.

I heard that cochlopetalums don't have very long lasting individual blooms (though they give numerous blooms sequentially), and so far this is true for me based on pinocchio. However Paph Judge Philip (pinocchio x philippinense) bloomed for a more satisfactory length of time for me. Perhaps your plant had a shortened lifespan on the bloom because of movement to a new environment, or it is more cochlo influenced. Plant age and size can even play a role, my judge philip had three mature growths and two small ones. Seemed that judge phillip wasn't acting very cochlo like because almost all the blooms came at once too (four blooms, but three blooms at the same time).

My paph pinocchio which is also a cochlopetalum dropped its bloom looking nearly perfect, so that is similar to your situation. I actually hoped to photograph two blooms at the same time, but it never happened yet. Its new bloom is just half opening.

I think Paph Judge Philip was self pollenating! (I might be very wrong about the self pollenating part...) The wrinkled blooms resisted falling off and all the ovaries stayed on (they usually turn yellow and drop off). I cut off the spike anyway after all four of the blooms expired.
Not really on topic but, I guess I'll post a photo of these two plants together too for comparison

I think Ho Chi Minh will show some brown spots and maybe some wrinkles before falling off. I am a bit suprised Ho Chi Minh lasted longer than glaucophyllum x glanduliferum too. Thought Ho Chi Minh are truely pretty, they don't last very long unfortunately, I hope you see two blooms at once!
