Default Phrag. Wallisii buds - is this normal?

Hi all - I've been lurking here for quite some time - just sitting back and enjoying (and coveting) all of your beautiful orchids. But now I finally have a question!

I have a Phrag. Wallisii in bud and it's the first long-petalled phrag I have had in bud. The buds look nothing like the buds I have had on other phrags, so I am wondering if these are "normal".

Here's a picture from today - they seem to be getting larger every day so I am hopeful they are actually going to be flowers soon!

Thanks.
eve

Hi and welcome! I am glad you decided to join in the discussion with a good question! Your phrag bud is completely normal. No worries. Be sure to post a photo when it opens!!
Cheers!

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

I've not seen it first hand, but have heard that some of the phrag buds have a stage they call the chilli-pepper stage... so guess this is where yours is at... can't be long now till they pop open... and I for one am looking forward to seeing it in all it's glory!

as said before, totally normal. should be spectacular! just make sure the elongating petals don't touch anything while they're growing. there is some controversy as to whether or not they will really stop growing if they contact a firm surface (i.e. a pot or a table or whatever), but most people don't take that chance.
