Question Orchid Pot - Not!!

Hi again

I wanted some pretty pots for my pretty new 'chids so being the Orchid noobie headed out and picked up some pretty pots that were marked as orchid pots. Once I got home and did some more researching I realized that they are not actually orchid pots but I believe African Violet self watering pots. Can orchids still survive in them or do I need to return them and purchase some thing with more ventiliation for the roots??
I was hoping I could put water in the bottom as long as it didn't touch the bottom of the inner pot to help with humidity??

Thank you all for helping me out with my very basic questions

Hi Lisa, personally I would take them back. You are quite right in thinking about more ventilation at the roots. Phals don't like to be wet. I've just started using a pebble tray for my 2 phals, just to raise the humidity, they are beginning to respond with a new leaf on each.
BTW love your avatar.

I agree with dragonn.

I also kind of like an old partially green with mold, stained up clay pot... Kind of gives the orchid character. <grin>

SO True! hehe...

I would also return the AV pots or plant some AVs in them and put my orchids on a pebble tray as Steve suggest.

Cheers,
BD

OK thank guys Didn't really want to take them back..but don't want to harm my 'chids. I am already looking at Lady Slippers. *evil grin. Prolly a little too adventurous...for a noobie like me.....

If any one knows of some where I can get some decorative pots with good ventilation please PM me...here are the ones I am taking back...

They're brilliant pots, I can see why you don't want to take them back. Why not plant AV's in them as Bruce suggests. Can't help you with sourcing others tho. As for the paphs, go for it, I find them easier than phals!

Digimom, If you plant in a plain clay pot, you can set that pot into an overlarge decorative pot or bowl. Need air circulation around the clay pot.
