    Red face "the Sister Moth"

Hi every one, While one sick Baby sits in her "bag" trying to get over trauma... I thought I would put up a few pictures of her Sister. As I look around and learn to navigate this site (awesome, have toolbar now!) I have seen some healthy Orchid leaves. So, its time to pay attention to my other plant. She too has some issues (PSTD)... even if she is a bit healthier. My question is... do I have to cut off her leaves too? They are not perfect, a couple are splitting down the middle and as you can see... have a little damage. I can handle it, please help me do the right thing .... Name: SSCN0769.JPG

Sharon, that orchid looks quite healthy. These type of orchids sometimes have leaves that split. Lots of reasons, but usually it is not a big deal. I would not remove the leaf. Leave it alone. Be sure to repot this orchid in a new mix and see what shape the roots are in; removing any that are rotten. I suspect it will have a very good root system from the looks of the leaves in the photo.

    Cheers,
    BD

    Smile That is Great News!!

Bruce... I was hoping you would say that! I have sent away for my potting mix, I am waiting until then to cut her flower stem and look at the roots. Its alright that she isn't perfect, and I don't care about winning a contest. What makes me happy... is that she is OK. Considering they where both on their way to the trash, not too long ago! I am one happy girl! Thank you...

    Unhappy Too late...

Good morning, I am very sad to say... my poor Orchid did not make it. I am grateful to everyone that gave me advice and tried helping me save her. Perhaps if I were more qualified?Even so maybe she was just too far gone, perhaps it was too late to save her? I believe her "Sister" Orchid, is doing ok. You all must think I am pretty silly to get so caught up over one plant... maybe so. This has definitely been a practice in impermanence and non-attachment for me. With this experience I have come to enjoy this web site... however, I think I will wait a bit before adopting any new babies. Thank you all for your help.

I'm sorry to hear about the one that did not make it. You may be right that it was already too far gone, but you never know unless you try. I do not think you are silly getting 'so caught up over one orchid'. Most of us have done the same at one time or another, and sadly, even the most experienced growers can lose an orchid too. I'm glad the sister is doing well.

    Hey Bruce,

What did you do to get your phal to grow again? I have one that the leaves fell off but the roots still look good.

Hi, Thank you so much for your reply, you made me feel much better. =) My friends think I am crazy (some are Buddhists too!) I have to admit, I have been looking at other Orchids... I am wondering if I should adopt a small one. One that likes a bit more light, a "easy" one to start with. I know it will take some time to flower, also I am wondering about the care of a small one compared to that of an already blooming Orchid? They are all so beautiful, one can't help but fall in love! Do you have any suggestions?

Just keep it in low light and water it. Let the little guy do his thing.

    Cheers,

If by small ones you mean seedlings, wetfeet101b gave some good advice for seedling care. You can find it at the top of the second page of the thread called 'Please advice on Den Burana'.

As to an easy orchid that likes a little more light, I have found oncidiums to be easy for me, and they bloom more than once a year. Let us know what you decide on.
