    Default Ice Orchids

Hi, while on vacation I saw Phals in plastic sleeves with Just Add Ice Orchids printed on them. I didn't pay any attention to them at that time. Yesterday I was at a local Home Improvement Center and they had a large display of them. I stopped and took a closer look and couldn't believe that they are telling people to water them by placing 3 three ice cubes per week on top of the growing medium. I just love the gimmicks they come up with to sell orchids. Customers buy these and when they die think that orchids are too difficult to grow and avoid buying them. Sorry just venting! LOL Bill

I'm the same way when it comes to finding a ball of spag in the middle of a plant that appears to be potted in wood. Makes me want to yell....

LOL Ron, perhaps the scotch would have lowered my blood pressure from this potential orchid abuse they are promoting. Am sure it would have calmed me down. mmmmmmm Bill

I had a neighbor tell me that she'd kept her orchid alive for a year doing this. It would be a way to keep people from overwatering it, I suppose.

My grandmother would collect the glasses from the dinner table on Sundays and pour out the beverages and then dump the remaining ice on her normal house plants. She did not grow orchids. Her house plants seemed to love it and were always healthy. I feel orchids would need a bit different care though. I think this is a gimmick as Bill suggests to sell orchids.

    Cheers,
    BD

I dont even like ice in my whiskey nor in my water.

I heard the ice thing in the past.

maybe it is the right amount for phals potted in sphagnum and plastic pots.
does not seem great but probably it is a lesser evil than overwatering.

I've never heard of ice treatment for phals.
but some growers here recommend to use ice to get cymbidiuns to bloom. I've never tried, but thinking in it for next autumn

That's the argument, using ice helps to initiate and maintain blooming in somebody's house that is 72 year round and no humidity. The local big box store has been carrying exclusively "ice orchids" for nearly two years, in fact I got my first lot of orchids on ultra clearance cause they were making space for the ice ones. In spite of the "bloom" reasoning, ice just seems like a horrible idea year round.
