    Default Phal Help

    Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to this and in need of help. I've checked through all the FAQs and can't seem to find the solution to my problem.

My Nan died a few years back and left me with a beautiful healthy phal ('Nan Plant') which has flourished until about a year ago. For the last 12 months all it's done is grow lots of aerial roots which are long and white. No flowers and progessively fewer healthy leaves. there are (or rather 'were') huge amounts of the aerial leaves.

The part of the plant in the bark compost started to turn a bit brown and soft so I stopped watering it as much and misted it once every few days. Other orchids I had were doing well on a light window in my shower room so I put 'Nan Plant' in there too but matters did not improve. The plant now has only a few healthy leaves with others turning brown and dropping off.

As a last resort I gave teh plant to my girlfriend for a change of scenery who's mum advised her to cut off all the aerial roots (as they were "dead") and the plant is now looking very sorry for itself.

The part of the plant sticking into the bark medium looks a bit brown and mushy and I'm worried the plant now has now way of drinking?

Can anyone help me save 'Nan-Plant'? What can I do?

    Thanks in advance>

Your phal needs to be repotted. I would suggest looking at a couple of the repotting articles and then head out for some supplies. If you are lacking a nursery with proper antifungal and such, you can substitute a good bath in Hydrogen Peroxide for the roots when you get the potting materials cleaned off them. Cut back the rotten brown roots, treat the plants roots after they are cleaned and put it into some fresh bark mix. If you reuse the pot, make sure and wash it thoroughly and allow it to dry before reusing it. The articles will have pictures and much more information...

    Daniel,

Aerial roots are sometimes a Phals. way of saying please repot me and get me out of this old, soggy, broken down medium. Never ever cut aerial roots! You need to repot this and "neglect' it. Do not water it until it is dry! Your 'Nan' will love your patience as it slowly comes back.
