Don't despair quite yet. They can come back from the brink, as long as they have a healthy root or two. When mine was in such dire straits, someone suggested misting the leaves (avoiding the crown--very important!) to help it take in/retain more moisture, since its roots were mostly gone. No idea if that actually helped, but it did recover, so I'll pass that suggestion on to you.

Also, orchids don't like to be wiggly in their pots, so if you can stabilize it somehow (rhizome clip, wire, whatever), or at least try not to jostle it, that will also encourage roots.

is it sounds like something fungal is going on! i would use a copper oxychloride regime for a while.
    This is how it goes:
-use a standard copper oxychloride. Use at one half or even one third of the recommended dosage.
-spray over foliage and medium once a week for 6 weeks. AVOID THE CROWN!
-after this, just use water maybe once a fortnight to keep it slightly dry for about 4 months. Watch for new root growth.
-When good root growth starts, fertilize weakly weekly for another 6 weeks, and when i say weekly, i mean like 1.5-2gms per 10L water.

Hope it helps, and i find this is great for almost any orchid ailing from fungal attacks!
