    Default NOID phal and ICE???

hey...was at a local box store today to pick up some random crap and found a rack of phals that were in for v'day. i thought this one was pretty and it had a good looking root system so at a low price, i brought it home. anyway, the tag on it suggested watering by placing three ice cubes on the surface of the media once a week. does anyone else think that this might not be a very good idea??? and have you ever heard of such a thing? and forgive the pic quality...those colors are hard to photo. the petals(?) have such a subtle color shift and tiny dots in the center.

LOL, I have seen the same ones here. I 'get' the idea - slow release of water, but think it is better if you water your plants and then let them dry out before watering again. JMHO

Hmm, looks like I should have read this before I saw & responded to Ischel's "Add Ice" NOID Phals! At the risk of repeating myself I'll say, as warmth loving plants, Phals seem particularly ill adapted to such a watering treatment.

    Cheers,
    Rob

I agree!! I've seen these tags at my local grocers florist dept where they sell the phals. I laughed so hard when I saw it!! Let me put it this way: if someone is so lazy that they can't remember to water a phal 1x a week, how are they going to remember to make ice cubes??? Lol...marketing people, I tell ya...

Well, I'm not going to try it, that is for sure. A good flooding with room temp water seems to be the best as I learned here. That being said, I may be able to see some logic in this.

The ice cubes will melt over a matter of a couple hours or less - this will possibly give the roots time to open up, because I assume they are going to be pretty dry by then. More likely though they are trying to get you not to overwater. The three ice cubes will provide a rather precise amount of water, and root rot will be very unlikely for beginners. Also, there will never be crown rot.

Love the "peachy" coloration...And by the way, I NEVER water with anything other than room temperature water. Cold water can shock an orchid, or so I've been told...Betty

the color of this phal is beautiful, but I strongly suggest that you don't water with ice. Instantly dead plant...

I bought 3 of those same ICE Phals at Easter at a BIG box store. 12 dollars...very healthy. Gave 1 away and told my friend how to h2o instead of ICE. Mine are beautiful and so is my friends. What a deal...I can't buy them for my store for that!
