    Default Phalaenopsis Ever Spring Gentle

    Hi all,

Well, after reading of several of you finding some nice pre-Valentines Day Phals in big box stores, I went into the Canadian big box store and looked at their Phals. I had never seen any with name tags in this chain before (unlike another big box store that's not limited to Canada), but this time I was startled to find a few with tags. What was even better, was the ones with tags were a dollar cheaper! (And they all came from the same grower.) This is Phal. Ever Spring Gentle and I was delighted to find one just coming into bloom. With luck, I will be able to enjoy it for a few months! The plants must have just come in, because they all looked so healthy.

    Cheers,
    Rob

Looks like Phal. Ever Spring Delight to me. Ever Spring Gentle is mostly red with just a splash of white at the tips of the petals and on the lip. Just MHO. Whatever the name it's lovely.

Well, that depends on the clone. I also had Ever Spring Gentle 'Champion' (alas, I lost it). It was quite different from this one, but also very different from what you describe. It was heavily spotted on the inner portion of the petals & sepals, so that the spots coalesced into almost solid purple, but pure white on the outer half of them. I guess it was about mid way between what you describe and this one. Are you basing your description on the photo in OrchidWiz?

Keep in mind, when these crosses are made, there can be quite a bit of variation between seedlings, as opposed to mericlones. To use a human analogy, if you had a sister, you would not look exactly like her unless she were your identical twin.

Unfortunately, there is no clone information on this tag, but I know it's not Ever Spring Gentle 'Champion'. It may or may not be Ever Spring Gentle. I think it probably is, simply because I've raised seedlings from a compot (Bedford Jezebel), which were the offspring of two harlequin parents. In spite of their parentage, two of the seedlings were not harlequins at all, one was and the fourth I traded away so I never learned what its blooms looked like.

    Cheers,
    Rob
